PARKS AND GREENSPACE SURVEY

947 responses received between June 2008 to August 2008

75% of respondents to the Parks Survey were satisfied with Edinburgh’s parks.

67% of respondents were satisfied with the upkeep of parks

Most respondents had not attempted to contact the Parks Service, but of those that had, only half felt this was easy.

63% of respondents felt that the parks service delivered value for money, 26% did not.

13% of respondents had previously complained about parks and of those 42% were dissatisfied with the response they received. Dissatisfaction was caused by a perception of nothing being done, the Council not caring or responses taking too long.

Upkeep and appearance of parks 64% in North rated parks as good (only lower to West 51%).

Meeting the needs of users – 71% of respondents in North Edinburgh felt that our parks made them proud of the city (higher than city average of 69%).

Main issues : general maintenance not of a high enough standard, sports facilities not well enough maintained, litter, dog fouling and not enough facilities for certain age groups or enough areas of interest.

Priorities for parks – for example - trees and woodlands 88%, grassed areas 88%, signage 67%, events 53%.

Majority of respondents were regular visitors, visiting at least once a week, spending between 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Main reasons for visiting a park, for example – 28% just walk by or through, 20% to enjoy open space, 14% walk dog, 2% watch wildlife, 1% have lunch.

Dog walkers were the most frequent of visitors and tended to stay in parks longer.
